Hardware in the Loop, or HIL for short, is a method for testing software running on the hardware it was designed for. It is widely used for embedded system testing and is the final testing stage before the software is released to the intended hardware. But even then it is tested in the final, or prototype, of the product before full launch.
Depending on the complexity in the software, the test system needs to release electric, network, and physical signals. This is done by using simple Arduino circuits or scalable real-time tools from suppliers. Some examples are National Instruments, Vector, and dSPACE. Whereas modelling tools used are Simulink, CarMaker, or GT-Suite.
